Tweenies
Tweenies
Children between two and three years of age are no longer babies, but are not yet ready for the structure of pre-school education - the Tweenies. These children love to explore and we encourage this through the variety of activities on
offer. We were one of the first nurseries in Scotland to use a structured curriculum as a basis for the design of our programme for our Tweenies.
Scotland now has its own curriculum guidance for supporting children under 3, called ‘Birth to Three, Supporting our youngest children’. Click here for a link to Learning, Teaching Scotland’s website with more information. This helps our staff to design a programme specifically to meet the individual needs of each child, to identify their next steps and to help the children reach those next steps. For more information, please ask to speak to one of our Tweenie Room Supervisors who will be happy to talk you through this curriculum.
The ratio for this age group is 1 adult to 5 children. This allows your child to build on their social skills in a small group whilst still allowing them a close bond with their key worker. We are happy to help you manage your child’s toilet training and encourage children to become more independent in their personal skills. Some Tweenies sleep in the afternoon, and others enjoy a quiet time in between periods of intense activity!
The Tweenies enjoy lots of independent play and there are always lots of toys available to them. They have lots of active and energetic play time and really enjoy messy play. We encourage children to take part in table top games and they will have the chance to work in small group, adult led activities if they want to, this allows them to learn specific things like the story of a religious festival, or to take part in a play and there is always a quiet, cosy area available for your child and we allow them to develop at their own pace.
The Tweenies spend time with the pre-schoolers as they get older so that they make friends and therefore the transition is an easy one. This also allows them to experience some of the more in-depth activities on offer for the older children.
