50 members of Step By Step staff attended a weekend training course at the Auchengillan Outdoor Centre in Stirlingshire at the end of August. During the weekend they participated in training courses on the Forest Schools Approach for Nurseries, Healthy Cooking with Children, Signing for Babies, Circus Skills, Orienteering, Use of Computers and Digital Photography. There was also a campfire where lots of new songs were learned and many opportunities to get to know their fellow team members a bit better.

Transient art – “the forest schools approach for nurseries course ran all day and was led by Aline Hill of the Forest Education department of the Forestry Commission. In this course the staff learned about safety in the woods, made some transient art – that will neither last forever or damage the environment and yet has a huge impact, learned just how relaxing it is to lie in a hammock and how therapeutic it can be to hug a tree.

Jacqueline, the chef at and owner of the Sisters Restaurant on Crow Rd came along for the day and taught us how easy it is to do healthy cooking with children. The participants made soup, meatballs, and fishcakes that are suitable for making with younger children and soup, chicken and fish that can be prepared with older children. We had an excellent lunch!!

Campfire Pictures and Karaoke - Our campfire on Friday evening owed more to Scouts and Guides that nursery education, but we all had lots of fun anyway!! We soon retired indoors to enjoy some karaoke.

Please ask your child’s key worker about their weekend, and baby parents listen out for your chance to learn how to do sign language with your child.
