Step by Step nursery in Carrickstone in Cumbernauld was purpose built in 1995 and joined Step By Step in 1998. Situated just off Eastfield Rd, it is all on one level ensuring easy access for prams, buggies and wheelchairs. Here with opening times from 7.30am till 6.00pm, we can provide care for up to 41 children.
The accommodation comprises of a cosy baby room which caters for up to 12 babies and a large play room for the 2-5 year olds which offers flexible accommodation that can be altered to provide one large indoor play space or two separate playrooms, depending on the needs of the children. The 2-5 room provides care for 29 children.
The children can also play freely in the quiet sensory room as well as have full daily access to the large landscaped gardens.
To the front of the building is a private car park which is available for parents when dropping off and collecting their child.
Baby Room
The baby room has 4 members of staff, especially selected for their caring and nurturing personalities.
Prior to starting a place within the baby room carers are invited to come along for settling in visits along with their baby to get to know the staff and discuss their child’s individual routine and requirements.
Communication with parents is priority in the baby room. Staff take the time to chat with parents informally at the start and end of each day as well as providing the parents with a daily diary packed with essential information about feeds, changes and special moments. Carers also have the opportunity view photographic slide shows weekly showing special moments at nursery.
The atmosphere within the room is relaxed and calm with lots of soft furnishings, visually stimulating lighting and natural wooden materials, encouraging the babies to develop all of their senses.
2-5 Year Room
The 2-5 room is designed to meet the growing needs of the children. Over the past 2 years we have worked closely with North Lanarkshire council to implement an Active Learning programme (click here for more information); This
room is furnished with natural wooden furniture that is used to break the large room into small, intimate and focused play spaces, these allow each child to explore and learn in the way that suits them best. These include a construction area, I.T area complete with touch screen smart board, creative area, role play corner, sand and water area as well as the space to get involved in energetic physical play. Quiet areas are also available for rest.
Enthusiastic staff challenge the children fully during free play and also lead set activities like singing, ring games and story time.
In the 2-5 room we focus on the Curriculum for Excellence (for more information click here) from the Scottish Government for the older children and the Birth to 3 curriculum for the younger ones (click here for more information). Staff support children fully whilst encouraging independence skills, preparing for the eventual transition to school.
It is vital to us that we maintain and develop the excellent relationship we developed with our children’s families when they were in the baby room. Parents and carers can view information boards which are completed daily, photographic slide shows are on view and in addition each child has their own profile folder filled with photographs and art work to which the children and their parents have free access. The staff understand the need to chat with carers daily and ensure communication is priority.

The largest garden for the 2 to 5 year olds was designed especially to meet their developmental needs. The garden provides opportunities for the children to investigate and explore their natural surroundings.
Many separate sections have been incorporated in to the design of the garden, including the bug garden and many others which promotes the children’s scientific skills and encourages them to ask questions about the world around them, the tree house which develops co-ordination and flexibility and the musical area where the children can fully express themselves.
The enclosed baby room garden is equally as intriguing, and more appropriate for babies, comprising a combination of bark, grass and decked areas. The babies have full access to a large variety of physical apparatus as well as a full sensory area to help develop their inquisitive little minds. Adequate shading is provided with large parasols in the summer months.
The nursery provides the oldest children with rain coats and wellington boots, whilst the youngest babies benefit from the use of saloupettes allowing for outdoor play in all weather.
